What are California State Historical Landmarks?
The state of California has designated over 1,100 historical landmarks. They note important people, places, and events.
Definition
California Historical Landmarks are sites, buildings, events, or features that are of historical value to the state.
Designation Criteria
Must be the first, last, only, or most significant of its type in the state; associated with someone who had a profound influence on the history of California; or an outstanding example of work of a builder, designer, or architect.
Approval
Landmark designation requests are reviewed by the California Office of Historic Preservation, then submitted to the Director of State Parks for approval.
